These are just random thoughts I have had floating around in my head....
If it's okay to trash talk about a rival sports team; And if we teach our elementary school children that sticks and stones will break their bones but words will never hurt them; And if we tell children to just ignore people when they say bad words, because that person is just trying to make them feel better. And if we are a people that cherish our rights to have freedom of speech. And if it is okay for rappers and R&B singers to degrade women verbally....why did Don Imus get fired? Are we telling our children not to express their opinions or open their mouths? Are we teaching our children that a redneck cowboy can really offend a college Women's basketball team? Is either A) a Women's Basketball team that weak that words destroy them or B) we are just looking for reasons to be offended?
Why do we fly the flag at half staff for a few killings in Virgina but we don't fly the flags at half staff everyday to help remind Americans that almost every day a US Soldier is killed in Iraq defending our freedoms? What makes 32 killings in one day more important than over 3,000 killings over the course of 4 years?
Why s the president of the United States allowed to take vacations on the same week he approves extending the troops in Iraq by 3 months?
My Sister is currently listening to John Lee Hooker. I wonder if he knows John and I were at JLH's last musical engagement. Santana was there. Van Morrison's daughter was there. Bonnie Raitt Sang as well. It was a rocking good time. I was never quite sure if John Lee hooker enjoyed it though. If I remember correctly it was on June 25, 2001, but it has been a while since then.

Actually, the number of Americans killed each day in Iraq/Afghanistan averages 3+ per day. On top of that, many times that live, but with traumatic brain injury and/or missing one or more limbs. I agree that all flags should be at half staff everyday until Americans stop dying in far away places for no good reason.

ReplyDeleteYeah. I said he was at his final musical engagement, but I never said he played at it. Mainly he just layed there with a not so excited look on his face. At times I thought he was bored. But yeah, For JLH's final musical engagement he wasn't really among the living.
ReplyDeleteI think the Imus comments were significant because she addressed a specific group of women... but isn't it interesting that they jumped on the "nappy headed" part, rather than the "hos" part. Wrong.
ReplyDeleteBut as far as freedom of speech goes... he wasn't arrested, so why is that an argument. The sponsers and his bosses have the right to fire him/stop the funding if/when he says something like this about a specific group of people- They have an image they have to keep and they're dodging a law suit.
Not to take anything away from the grevious things that happened in Virginia, but i agree that flags at half staff as long as we are at war is how it ought to be. Remind everyone that even though some we are fighting for something our leaders feel strongly about, men are dying and lives for them and their families are changing every day. If the country belives this is so noble... they why aren't they drawing this to mind- rather than the actions of a stalker gone mass-murderer?

ReplyDeleteGU didn't have a birthday party, birthday cake, open a gift, flowers, or even balloons. The day wouldn't have even been significant if people like you hadn't wished it happy.
ReplyDeleteI'm fine with Don Imus saying things to shock people and if you tune in you ought to expect it... thing is he was refering to a specific group of people this time.
Point is that he hasn't been wronged, if anything he's been lucky that he hasn't been fired/lost sponsers earlier.
They have rehab programs for redneck cowboys that can't learn to keep their mouths shut? I never knew.
