But why doesn't it look like the picture

So tonight was a little frustrating. John and I try to cook at home as much as possible and our meals have gotten boring. So I have started using this Betty Crocker cookbook I bought in Rexburg.Every time I cook out of that cook book, though, I get very disappointed. The food on my plate never looks like the picture. Take tonight, for example.

The Picture on top is what it is supposed to look like. The picture on the bottom is how it looked on John's plate. It bothers me when those two don't look alike. Nina says that my stuff will never look like the stuff in the picture, but it still bothers me.

  1. Sean, did you know that there is s such thing as a food stylist? It's true, and they make the food look like that with lots of tricks like spraying it with shellac. So, do you really want your food to look like that?

  2. Well for starters you didn't even cook all of the same food;)

  3. Ange and I watch a lot of Food Network and we've learned the dark secrets of why that is the case: food stylists. These are people whose only job is to "sculpt" perfect-looking dishes to be photographed. They use airbrushes, toothpicks, special sprays/paints, and even materials like plastic and clay, all to give the food the perfect look. They spend hours at it. So don't feel bad, Sean. :-)

Plus, it looks like you guys went with corn instead of green beans, and left out the pasta. So there are two differences right there. :-)

Good luck in your ongoing quest. I'm sure you'll make it someday!

  4. i watched this thing on food network once= and every cooking show/photo shoot of food/everything has something called a food stylist. These people's ENTIRE CAREER is making sure the food looks "just so".

You need to remember to at least have something green (salad, broccoli, green beans) with every dinner you make. Really it's the variety of colors that makes the plate look atractive and interesting.

if you name the colors on the plate of food you made...the list ends after yellow and red. On Betty's Plate there is at least red, green, and yellow. That's why a lot of times restaurants put some parsley, cabbage, or lettuce on your plate... not really for the mouth as much as it is for the eyes.

  7. Katie:The reason there is 20 million people telling me that there are "food stylists" is because I have comment moderation on and no one knew that the others had said the same thing.

    It tasted great, BTW.
